The Ancient Art of Felting with Nicole Wiegman
This introductory workshop begins with a group discussion exploring the ancient origins of felting, including some of the earliest regions and practices where felt was first developed and used. Participants will then be introduced to the four fiber types grown on the instructor’s Arizona farm - Huacaya Alpaca, Suri Alpaca, Merino Wool, and Navajo-Churro Wool. Learning briefly about their histories, characteristics, uses, and how each one felts differently.
Students will create a beautiful piece of flat felt with the option to needle felt raw locks as surface accents. The process will include fiber layout and ancient and modern felting techniques with an emphasis on water conservation and minimal waste practices. All fiber and supplies provided.
Students will walk away with a completed piece of felt, along with a strong foundation and a deeper connection to this amazing textile technique.
